What is a Prosthodontist?

San Diego Prosthodontists Dr. Harold J. Gulbransen and Dr. Scott A. Recksiedler

What is a Prosthodontist? What does a Prosthodontist do?  What does the specialty field of Prosthodontics include?

Dr. Harold Gulbransen and Dr. Scott Recksiedler at SAN DIEGO PROSTHODONTICS are trained Prosthodontists. Dr. Gulbransen has been practicing in the San Diego area for 30 years.  His wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of Prosthodontics is evidenced by the respect he enjoys in the San Diego dental community.

According to the American College of Prosthodontists(ACP), a prosthodontist is a dentist who:

  1. Specializes in the restoration of natural teeth or the replacement of missing teeth and adjacent oral and facial tissues with artificial substitutes. Prosthodontic treatment may include the use of dental implants, removable partial or full dentures, caps, crowns, bridges, dental implant anchored restorations, or combinations of the above.
  2. Has received three or four additional years of training after dental school.  This additional post-graduate education after graduation from dental school is earned at either a hospital or university-based program accredited by the American Dental Association. This advanced training includes reviews of the literature, advanced level courses, clinical and laboratory experience and treatment of patients. This specialty education provides skills and knowledge beyond the training of general dentists.  Prosthodontists are also trained in the hands-on technical aspects of laboratory fabrication of complex dental prosthetics and complex restoration of dental and facial esthetics. Prosthodontists have a comprehensive knowledge of dental materials and techniques, insuring both function and esthetics when it comes to your treatment.
  3. Restores optimal function and appearance of your smile. Whether your care requires single crowns, fillings, veneers, dental bridges, dentures or complex implant restorations, you can be assured that you are receiving state-of-the-art dentistry from your prosthodontist, who is dedicated to the highest standards of care in restoration and replacement of teeth.

Prosthodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association(ADA).  Prosthodontics is the dental specialty that includes the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort and appearance of patients who have missing or deficient teethProsthodontists are experts in the replacement of teeth—they are trained to make your smile beautiful as well as functional.

In contrast to general dentists, prosthodontists have completed several complex dental treatments before they receive their prosthodontic certificate.  The American Dental Association does not recognize Cosmetic Dentistry as a specialty.  Prosthodontics is the only dental specialty under which the concentration of cosmetic dentistry falls.  There are only 3,200 prosthodontists practicing in the United States in comparison to over 170,000 general dentists.

Extensive training and experience provide prosthodontists a special understanding of the dynamics of your smile.  They are trained in state-of-the-art techniques to treat diverse and complex dental conditions and restore the function and aesthetics in your mouth.  Prosthodontists provide an extremely high level of care to patients with missing teeth, or having significant damage to their existing teeth. Prosthodontists work with congenital defects as well as problems arising from trauma and neglect.

We refer to the prosthodontist as the ‘quarterback’ of the dental treatment plan, leading a team of specialists, general dentists and other health care professionals to develop solutions for your dental and oral health concerns.
